CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Judai Yuki
Age: 18
Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh GX! (Japanese/Original version)
Canon Point: Post canon, eleven months after the graduation duel
Character Information: http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Jaden_Yuki (The Yugioh wiki uses dub names, so Judai is referred to as Jaden on the wiki.)
Personality:
"He's the guy who hates sitting around the most. Just like a tornado, appearing and then vanishing like a ghost."
Judai is that kid at school who finds the adventure in everything; whether it's investigating abandoned dorms shrouded in rumors of disappearing students, unknown worlds and dimensions, or even the volcano forming the campus island, Judai wants to go and explore. Despite being classed as lazy throughout most of the series, Judai enthusiastically chases after anything unknown, especially if even a little of it can be connected to 'Duel Monsters'. Even a bland field trip to Domino City (realistically the hometown for many of the students) leaves Judai stoked, and he gets straight into exploration after being left alone with his two best friends-who in contrast were only slightly amused.
Eager as he is to see the world, Judai tends to get himself into a lot of trouble due to that hasty attitude of his. Whenever there's a problem, Judai immediately rushes head first into what he thinks will solve it, with a complete and utter disregard for external factors and consequences. Early seasons often play this for laughs, using it to highlight his quirkiness - but more often than not this results in Judai's scope of events being dangerously narrow, as he wants to do what he sees as best in the short term, immediately. When Judai has the key to a dangerous satellite and the villain threatens to kill one of Judai's friends if he doesn’t hand it over, Judai throws his bargaining chip away, before his friend’s safety is even secured. On another occasion, Judai is once so determined to find and save Johan from another dimension that he neglects the friends that came intending to help, resulting in their kidnapping and sacrifice.
Such a narrow field of view isn't surprising, with how self-reliant he is. When Judai made the decision to journey into the unknown dimension in order to find and save Johan, it didn't even occur to him to bring some support along after all. It isn't that he doesn't trust anyone, however - nor even that he doesn't want to be open with them. Judai has acted this way since childhood, his parents' neglect forcing him to fend for himself from a very young age. He isn't unaware of this fault of his either; he reflects on his actions late in the series often, and is aware of the consequences. In fact, feeling obligated to bear the weight of them on his shoulders is what leads Judai to attempt to drop out of Duel Academia after he realizes that so many of the dangerous incidents there are centered around him - even though Academia is the only place where Judai truly felt he had friends and a home.
While he commits himself to these extreme acts of protection for his friends, a greater piece of why he tried to leave could in fact be the remorse he feels for his actions - and the resulting awareness that what he does could make things far worse than they already are. After all, why would he believe in his actions when his mistakes resulted in the sacrifice of his friends and eventually the loss of his self for a while as well? He carries the guilt of the events within the Duel Monster dimensions heavily, and through this, his belief in others completely outshines his own self-confidence. Judai believes more than anything that the bonds others forge between themselves (forgetting, often, to include himself in there) will help them endure their failures and desires to give up, carrying them forward through whatever struggles they face. This strength of his comes through in his duel against Paradox, when he (along with Yami Yugi) convinces Yuusei not to give up in the fight. Despite only knowing Yusei for a day, he tells him that he believes in them, spurring his ally onward to win the fight.
Of course, as much as he believes in his friends, he does not necessarily understand them in the slightest. The same things that caused him to act in ways he would forever regret are parts of him that remain strong, aided by an astonishing amount of ignorance to the feelings and actions of others - and Judai even has the ability to sense emotions! A side of him that often causes people to view him as selfish, Judai very often has dueling on the mind above anything else. Friend and enemy alike are met with badly timed jokes and puns in dire situations, perpetuating the image of carelessness to them. A prominent example of this is during his graduation Tag Duel Tournament, when he is partnered with Asuka - after realizing he was ignoring her plays in favor of his own, he puts more focus into dueling as a proper partner, but only after Asuka is switched with Rei during a partner swap card effect. Judai completely fails to realize why the combination of these events upsets Asuka so much, given that he is finally listening to what Asuka wanted him to do-and while Asuka never tells him directly that she has feelings for him, it is obvious to anyone else that she feels he's rejected them.
His sense for the cards is far stronger than his sense of what is around him, needless to say. In the duels he's hailed for, Judai prefers improvised thinking and last-minute combos above any other strategy, relying more on his luck and faith that the cards will pull through for him. As expected of such thinking, Judai isn't very 'book smart'. While his unorthodox and intuitive ways of thinking can sometimes solve problems easily (such as using a cat's fleas to distract the man who was blackmailing two of his friends), it normally ends in Judai looking unintelligent. From expecting holographic water to drown him, to not knowing what the word 'fiance' means, his lack of knowledge about the world beyond dueling sticks with him from start to finish. It improves only slightly by the end of his canon, to the point where it is implied that Judai fails some of his tests through laziness alone (sleeping through both his classes, and the exams themselves) - something supported by the fact that when Cronos tries to help Judai obtain the last credits for graduation, the boy completes them and passes in record time while lamenting the fact that he never focused enough in his classes beforehand.
Ignorant and foolish as he is, it cannot be said that he doesn't care. As evidenced by his desire to keep his friends safe and atone for the things he's (however unintentionally) done to them, he is in fact very altruistic. Friendly and empathetic to others' troubles when he's finally aware of what's going on, there is a reason why Judai acts so hastily in the face of danger after all. When it comes to his friends, or even complete strangers, Judai will put his very life on the line and ask for nothing in return. Even back when he barely knew Asuka, he went to rescue both her and her brother on two separate occasions despite the chance of him dying. When thanked, he said to think nothing of it - it was just the right thing to do. A stronger example of this - one that isn't potentially framed in ignorance to the danger itself, especially - is how Judai treats Yubel by the end of the series. Despite being someone who orchestrated his breakdown and descent to madness, even sacrificing his friends, Judai forgives them entirely - letting them into his heart and soul. When Judai is true to himself, it is clear that his actions come from the goodness of his heart regardless of any misunderstandings or failings - and his concern for the well-being of others persists whether they accept it or not.
The fact that Judai has been able to come through for his friends even after such dire mistakes might as well be things left entirely to dumb luck. Being lucky, one could say, is a trait shared by all shonen protagonists - but there is being lucky, and then there's being Judai Yuki. From drawing the coveted golden eggwich sandwich out of a cart full of identically wrapped lunches, to drawing just the card he needs in a duel, and even making it through to graduation at all as the drop-out boy of the Academia, his luck stands out among all others in the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise as a whole. With luck, however, comes faith - faith that he will get what he wants from the lunch bin, faith in just the right cards being drawn out from his deck, and above everything, faith in the people around him, though that one doesn't necessarily affect his lucky streak in the same way.
The cards, as much as he values his friends, are perhaps the most important. He would no doubt call them friends in their own way as well. He has absolute faith in his cards, and strongly believes in the bond between a duelist and their deck. It is to the point that when Shou asks him what he should do when his brother's deck fails to respond to him, Judai cryptically answers "If you want to know what a deck thinks, just ask." Insult Judai, and he won't react too much. Insult his friends however, and above all his cards, and he'll react with absolute rage.
With such a carefree attitude toward matters affecting himself, and comparatively strong ones when it comes to the ones he cares for, Judai is overall a cheerful and happy-go-lucky person even after the sobering up that followed his experiences at Duel Academia. He is someone who stands by his friends through everything-building hype for them to have a good time, smiling and joking as much as it takes to cheer someone up. His actions as Haou in the Dark World dimension may have left him cynical and focused on nothing but the protection of his friends, but with his passion for dueling rejuvenated Judai's smile is here to stay. His experience leaves him a young man learning to balance work and play, learning to become more responsible without losing the passions that make him who he is. And knowing that, knowing that he has been able to make those around him happy through his dueling by the end of his time with them makes Judai the happiest man alive.
which is why it's time to throw him into Ryslig and test his limits :D

Little was known about the Aldrig Mountain Range. In fact, so little was known, that some people didn’t know that it existed, or that it even had a name. From what Judai had gathered, the place was like a maze, and anyone who dared to venture into the mountains (even minotaurs) disappeared for weeks, returning barely functioning. Despite the horrifying warnings from monsters and humans alike, Judai couldn’t help but grin as he heard the stories. It was all terribly exciting, and Judai decided that he would go up there by himself. While he could have done some research, Judai purposefully decided to forgo it, knowing that attempting to find a map and searching through a library would only arm his brain with a headache.
“If you’re going to be stupid and insist on going by yourself, at least wait to be finished changing into a monster,” one of the locals in Bavan warned him. Judai rolled his eyes as he kept filling his haversack. “I mean it. You’ll have more endurance as one of them.”
“Nah. I want to get up there before I start growing weird body parts.” Judai took the loaf of bread off the man and he quickly stuffed it into his bag in the hopes of filling it with as many supplies as he could. He quickly realised his mistake though. All his bread was squished and he had broken a water bottle. Thankfully, the loaves were rolled up in the wax paper that Judai had bought, so it took little work for him to fish out the bottle and clean up the small leak. “Don’t worry. I’ll be fine! It’s not my first time I’ve trudged through a tundra. Hey, alliteration!” The man merely snorted.
“Did you only pack bread and water?”
“And my sleeping bag!” Judai smiled, even when the man outright called him an idiot, and held his arm out. He was passed another bottle of water and it was promptly stuffed in before being sealed off. Satisfied with his work, Judai stood up and gave the man a thumbs up. “Hey… Thanks for all the bread, man. I appreciate it.”
“You’re an idiot. You realise that.” However, when Judai stretched his hand out, the man took it and shook it. When Judai pulled away, the man looked at what Judai had palmed over and then stared at Judai. “There’s five times the value of your products here! I don’t have change for this!”
“Then keep the change. All the same to me,” Judai smiled and made a beeline for the door. “All the best to your daughter, okay? Make sure she gets the treatment she needs.” Before the man could say another word, Judai was out of the bakery, running at full sprint northeast. Even without his super agility and his enhanced endurance, Judai was able to effortlessly run through the streets, ignoring the sights of the city that he had long gotten used to.
Coming to Ryslig had been strange, but as one who already parted with his friends on good terms, Judai didn’t feel like he had lost as much as everyone else. Most people had a family to go home to, or friends that depended on them, but Judai hadn't seen his friends in a year. He had written to them at least, and relatively recently too, so he didn't feel any more distant to them than how he usually was.
"Out of Bavan already. Huh. Must be faster than I thought," he said with a grin. "How much longer do you think I'll make it at this speed, Yubel?" Judai glanced over his shoulder, but his face fell, realising that his partner was not there. That was right... he couldn't see spirits anymore, and Yubel was gone.
Judai hadn't lost as much as everyone else, but he had still lost something important. Half of his soul. When he fused with Yubel, he swore that he would be with them forever. However, the Fog God had somehow managed to separate them, ripping Yubel away from him. He had never realised how empty he felt without them, their guiding hand and spirit helping him along for so long.
The brunette slowed his run down and he gave a small sigh. The last few weeks had been hard, and the more that he thought about it, the more he realised that parts of his soul were missing: Yubel, his deck, the power of Haou... all of it was gone. It left a hollow feeling in his chest, and made his stomach churn (thought that could have easily just been hunger. He's been so hungry these days).
"Mountains... right." Judai made himself smile and he looked ahead towards the mountains, hidden from view over the long distance. He'd go there and make himself feel better, hopefully. Probably. That's what he promised, right? To have fun and to take care of himself. He had to keep that promise to his friends, no matter what.

Date: 2016-07-29 04:52 am (UTC)RE: Yubel: We would like more information as to how accepting Yubel has affected Judai.
There’s a lot to go into with how Judai has been affected by Yubel’s presence in his life, but the key point is that Yubel is more a catalyst than a cause. Accepting Yubel makes Judai realise how many responsibilities he has and forces him to mature. GX is renowned for the idiot hero Judai, but the Judai I play is his older self. He’s had to grow up and learn about his place in the world the hard way.
Judai accepts Yubel at the end of season 3. Before that, Yubel has attacked the school, tortured and possessed Johan (one of Judai’s close friends), and set up the stage for Judai to sacrifice most of the rest of his friends who came with him to the other dimension. Judai does not come in waving an olive branch of peace, he’s furious and feeling guilty for his actions as Haou - a supreme king who was planning dimension-wide war and subjugation. However, as the duel between Yubel and Judai progresses, Judai learns several things about his former relationship with Yubel, especially how he treated her in his past life and how he did as a child.
In his past life, a human Yubel promised she would protect the wielder of the Gentle Darkness from the Light of Destruction, and she would do that by equipping herself with armour from a dragon, transforming her into her current form. In return, Judai’s former self pledges his love to Yubel, and states he will never love anyone else. But when Judai was a child, Yubel went and took things too far. As a card, they physically hurt those who hurt Judai (even for something as simple as losing a duel to an adult). Judai then put them on a rocket to space, and hoped that space waves would help heal their mind, but instead Yubel was warped by the Light of Destruction, making them twisted and believing that Judai sent them away to make them feel pain, and that pain is equal to love. To make matters worse, Judai forgot all about them. Judai’s parents had Judai undergo extensive treatment so he would stop having constant nightmares. However, these nightmares were Yubel’s screams of pain for help, and only by forgetting them could Judai be at peace.
Needless to say, learning all of this makes Judai feel incredibly guilty. Yubel is his partner, and everything they’ve done was only because they were trying to do what was promised so long ago. He knows all of this is partially his fault, and what pain Yubel went through. Even though he’s angry and frustrated, Judai opens himself up and lets go of that rage. He lets Yubel fuse with him so they can be together forever, just how they always wanted. Any remorsefulness comes from Judai’s end and not Yubel’s.
Merging with Yubel is the first real step towards him accepting the consequences of his actions and really thinking about what he can do. This is beyond swearing revenge and chasing them, this is making a conscious effort to resolve things. He accepts his own past and his new role as the wielder of the Gentle Darkness, with the power of Haou. The act of fusion was forgiving Yubel's actions (while shouldering his own), and is the walkway to season 4, where Judai continues to amend for his mistakes and grow as a person.
Judai still has to deal with the consequences of his actions even after Yubel, namely the PTSD that came with sacrificing his friends. Even though he forgives Yubel for doing so, he still willingly made that choice and can’t forgive himself so easily. As a consequence of merging, Judai is also aware that he's no longer just a human, but someone who is a combination of human and duel monster, and he is this odd thing in-between. An interesting trait to note is that while Judai still maintains his confidence, there’s almost a sense of cockiness when he fights non-humans like him.
A part of him does think that people will view him as a monster, and for a time, he does isolate himself because of that. It takes him a while to grow out of that state - where he’s now taking things too seriously and forgetting about what’s important to him and what’s fun - but he’s accepted it by the end of the series, even though he acknowledges he is different.
Accepting Yubel has opened up Judai’s heart a little more too. Due to his experiences, he leaves Duel Academia with the intent on helping people that have gone through something similar to what he has with duel spirits and he is a bit more open to other people's feelings.
TL;DR: Yubel is the reason Judai came to maturity, and how he came to balance serious with fun. He has become more aware of others and their feelings, and more importantly his effect on those matters… even if he obviously still needs to work on recognizing those emotions in others. Yubel made Judai more aware, mature, and perhaps even more forgiving, balancing Judai out.
